  1. This archive contains TrueCrypt 3.1a setup and documentation.

  4. IMPORTANT NOTES
  5. ===============
  6.  
  7. If you are upgrading from an older version of TrueCrypt, it is normally 
  8. not necessary to uninstall it first. However, if any errors are
  9. reported, we recommend that you uninstall the older version first (click
  10. Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs ->
  11. -> TrueCrypt -> Change/Remove) and restart the operating system.
  12. Note that uninstalling TrueCrypt never removes any TrueCrypt volumes.

  15. IMPORTANT NOTE TO USERS UPGRADING FROM TRUECRYPT 2.1 OR EARLIER:
  16. TrueCrypt volumes encrypted using the IDEA encryption algorithm cannot
  17. be mounted using this version. If you have such a volume, before
  18. upgrading, please create a new TrueCrypt volume using a cipher other
  19. than IDEA and move your files to this new volume.

  21. IMPORTANT NOTE TO USERS UPGRADING FROM TRUECRYPT 3.0 OR 3.0A: Note that 
  22. after you upgrade to this new version of TrueCrypt, due to a bug in v3.0 
  23. and 3.0a, it will not be possible to mount hidden volumes created with 
  24. TrueCrypt 3.0 or 3.0a located on some removable media, e.g., some USB 
  25. memory sticks (does not apply to file-hosted containers). If that is the 
  26. case, please before upgrading to this new version, move your files to a 
  27. temporary TrueCrypt volume on a non-removable medium or to a non-hidden 
  28. volume on a removable medium, and move the data from the old hidden 
  29. volume to this temporary one. Then install this new version of 
  30. TrueCrypt, create a new hidden volume, and move your files from the 
  31. temporary volume to it. Please see the 'Version History' in the 
  32. documentation for more information. If needed, TrueCrypt 3.0a is

  36. Before using TrueCrypt, we recommend that you read the TrueCrypt User's
  37. Guide, which can be found in the 'Setup Files' folder. To view or print
  38. it, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader (which is freely available at
  39. http://www.adobe.com). Note that the program documentation is also
  40. automatically copied to the folder to which TrueCrypt is installed, and 
  41. will be accessible via the Start menu and the TrueCrypt user interface.

  45. REQUIREMENTS

  48. - One of the following operating systems:
  49.   Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003

  51. - Free disk space: approximately 1.4 MB (does not apply if you run
  52.   TrueCrypt in 'traveller' mode).

  56. INSTALLATION
  57. ============

  59. To install TrueCrypt, run the file 'TrueCrypt Setup.exe'. It is not
  60. necessary to restart the operating system after the installation
  61. finishes.
  62. Remark: It is also possible to run 'TrueCrypt.exe' directly from the
  63. 'Setup Files' folder without installation ('traveller' mode).

  67. LICENSING INFORMATION

  70. Before installing and/or running TrueCrypt (i.e., running 
  71. 'TrueCrypt.exe', 'TrueCrypt Setup.exe', or 'TrueCrypt Format.exe'), you
  72. must agree to the license contained in the 'License.txt' file in the
  73. 'Setup Files' folder.

  77. WHAT IS NEW IN TRUECRYPT 3.1A
  78. =============================

  80. Bug fixes:
  81.     
  82. - Volumes mounted as removable media can now be checked/repaired 
  83.   ('chkdsk.exe'), defragmented, formatted, etc.
  84.  
  85. - The Volume Creation Wizard now respects default mount options set via 
  86.   'Tools' -> 'Preferences'.

  88. - Fixed bug which caused mount/dismount to fail on some systems.
  89.  
  90. - The TrueCrypt uninstaller is now always installed during installation.

  92. - Relative paths can be used with the /volume option (command line 
  93.   usage).

  95. - Drive A: will no longer disappear from Windows Explorer (e.g., the 'My 
  96.   Computer' list) after 'Dismount All'.

  109.   properties dialog.
